Quarter 2:
The Brain & Problem Solving

The brain is an amazing organ! Students will learn about the three major parts of the brain, the hemispheres of the brain, where the brain is located, its size, color, texture, and weight. Students will also learn about neurons: what they are, what they look like, their basic parts, and the "job" (function) of each part. Using information and materials, the students will build a neuron of their choice. Finally, students will learn about the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system to understand that the brain and the rest of the body are connected and that communication between the two takes time. At the end of the study, students will make a model of a brain using their creativity to come up with materials to represent all the parts of the brain.
During this time, students will also work on problem solving activities daily and read the novel, "The View from Saturday," which is about a group of gifted students who come together to work on an academic competition.
